“Being Natural is for the birds.”
A coworker actually said this to my sister. Like who actually says something that like to a natural anyone?! How awful!
Starting your natural hair journey is tough enough when your aren’t faced with external criticism. It’s terrible when newbie naturals have to deal with the negative perspective of those closest to them. Most of the reactions are due to unfamiliarity with natural hair, confusion, jealously, or downright ignorance. No matter what the reaction you receive, its important to remember that its your journey- and no one should deter you from it.
That said, I have been very fortunate to have a supportive husband, fellow natural sister, AND a bestfriend that is a hardcore curly (white girl natural- lol!)
Recently, on a trip to PA for a speaking engagement- I woke up early in our shared hotel room, headed to the bathroom, and this was the first thing I saw:
It warmed my nappy heart. Haha! My bestie has always had a head of super curls:
And we’ve openly discussed, and talked about the joys of curls, best products (she’s a junkie too!)- and the similarities in caring for Caucasian curls vs. African American curls (we decided that curls are curls– the basic regimen will always be the same!). She loves the DevaCurl line of products:
I consider myself very fortunate to have so many people in my life that are on this journey, and its super cool to watch my (different curled) BFF go on the journey with me!
Viva la (curly) revolution!
Curlistas, do you have a ‘journeymate?’- Have you experienced negativity from those closest to you?
